“Thatcher was a prime minister who denounced Nelson Mandela as a terrorist, defended the Chilean fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet, ratcheted up the cold war, and unleashed militarised police on trade unionists and black communities alike. She was Britain’s first woman prime minister, but her policies hit women hardest, like Cameron’s today.”
Please remember the above statement if you go to see The Iron Lady and start to hail her as a feminist icon (she hated feminists).

i feel like @the-left-is-right will have something good to add to this!

OH. OH. OH MARGARET THATCHER ? WELL , she was the worst prime minster stupid bitch cunt old fucking twat. She let a member of her OWN PARLIAMENT (Bobby Sands MP) die as well as 9 others (not in Parliament)while on hunger strike on her watch. Brutally aggressive to the Irish. AHHH I HATE THIS. I HATE HER. THIS MAKES ME MAD. I’M MAD , WHEN I’M MAD YOU WON’T LIKE ME WHEN I’M MAD…. (I eat a lot of food to cover my feelings)

Meryl Streep would not be my choice to play Maggie Thatcher, but Boris Karloff is dead.

Let’s not forget either that she proposed in the early 80’s, as a public health policy, that all gay men should be forced into quarantine in closed institutions as an strategy to stop the spread of HIV infections. Basically internment camps for homosexuals.
Her government passed Clause 28 in 1988, which made it illegal to “portray homosexuality in a positive light.” It wasn’t repealed until 2003.
She was the inspiration for the original V for Vendetta comic and specifically the whole passage about what happened to Valerie.
And seriously, she was buddies with Pinochet, she was pretty evil.

lol Ashley is gonna hate me for this but the woman reminds me of Umbridge tbh. But, yeah, no, I only ever here awful things about this woman tbh :| Not a good choice Meryl Streep.

THIS THIS THIS. All of this so much. I can already see people getting sucked in to the idea that she was a powerful woman and therefore must be a role model/good figure and it’s so not true.

All of the above. I think ‘Empire’ wrote a great review on it. Basically Streep was praised for her performance but the content and over all quality can’t be ignored etc:
“The inescapable fact is that — for all the boldness of its structural approach — this country still aches from the impact of Thatcher’s rule. There are many who will never forgive her for what she did (the mines, the Falklands, the poll tax, and that’s just the half of it) — just as there are many who still praise her strength, and applaud her emphasis on conviction rather than compromise. Whichever way you lean, there will be baggage taken into British cinemas. That is simply not comparable with going to a performance of Lear. To think otherwise is, at best, wishful.”
